The Zulus having met with effective resistance from the British garrison of the fortified post near Rorkesdrift had retired, although they had succeeded in setting the various buildings on fire. To the left is the house of the Rev. Witt and to the right is the house used as a Hospital. On the foreground, to the left, the mounted men, under Lieut Col Russell, galloping up to the Hospital to rescue the beleaguered garrison.
