Year's Largest Liner Launcher in Britain: The new liner 'Oronsay' entering the water at her launch. The 28,200 ton 'Oronsay' biggest passenger liner to be built in Britain this year, was launched from the Vickers-Armstrong yards at Barrow-in-Furness. The liner, last at present on the yards' order book, is the eight to be built at Barrow for the Orient Company. She is scheduled for then Tilbury-Australia service, will carry 668 first-class and 633 tourist-class passengers and have a crew of 622. Turbines of 42,500 shaft horsepower will give her a service speed of 22 knots. 'Oronsay' is due to make her maiden voyage next March. July 1, 1950. (Photo by Reuterphoto).
