When Mary Francombe was eleven she was taken to a children's home. And there - among and lost and unwanted babies - she was brought up. At seventeen they asked Mary what she wanted to do; what career she would like. Mary's answer came at once. "I want to look after children," she said. So brown eyed Mary became a student nurse. And now, at a children's home in North London, she is "Mummy" to twenty four tiny tots aged between a few days and five years. Mary now nineteen, is here seen with one of the children she looks after - four month old Philip. She said: "It's a full-time job, but I love them all." And the matron said: "All the children loves her. She becomes so fond of them that when - ever one of them leaves to be adopted she gets really upset." November 10, 1953. (Photo by Daily Mirror).
