The Bourbon troops fought against the city's resistance, reaching hand-to-hand combat in the early morning of 11 September in the streets near the walls of the Ribera neighbourhood. The bastion of Saint Peter was reconquered up to eleven times by the resistance. Rafael de Casanova (ca. 1660-1743), Conseller en Cap (Councillor in Chief) of Barcelona, flew the flag of Saint Eulalia, patron saint of the city, to lead a desperate counterattack. In this action he was wounded by a gunshot wound in the thigh, handing over the flag to Juan de Lanuza (ca. 1626-1723), Count of Plasencia, protector of the military Brac.
