Their War On Forest Fires -- The New Forest, Hampshire, Commissioners are introducing modern fire-fighting methods into their existent equipment and routine. New 'recruits' in the battle against forest fires are two wireless-equipped Land Rovers with trailer pumps in tow, a permanent radio-equipped fire tower at Emery Down near Lyndhurst, and walkie-talkie apparatus for forest workers, who will now add fire-prevention with modern equipment to their routine work. Main radio towers will cover most of the Forest. Whilst major outbreaks will be the concern of the district fire brigades, these new methods will, it is fele, prevent many big fires. During unusually hot weather, fire towers will be manned from dawn to dusk. April 5, 1955. (Photo by Reuterphoto).
