The paintings, one in the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, and the other in a private collection, offer an identical view of the palace in daylight and in moonlight. The drawing combines the figures of the former with the dramatically lit sky of the latter. Squared with graphite, it can be assumed that the sheet preceded both paintings, as there would have been little reason to make such a detailed model after the completion of the paintings.
