A "Utility" Jet on View. The Folland Midge is the prototype of the Gnat, the world's first light jet fighter. It is powered by an Armstrong Siddeley "Viper" turbojet, but later on, will be equipped with a very much more powerful engine, the Bristol Orpheus. It can fly in excess of 600 mph, and has only recently made its first flight. Designed by Mr. William Peter, the Gnat can be built for about a quarter of the cost of a normal get. This picture, taken in the air over Guildford, shows the place in flight. It will be shown at the Farnborough Air Show next month. August 27, 1954.
