Date: 1870-1891.Two women, identified as nursemaids by their uniforms, appear here in a domestic interior. One reads by fireplace near small stockings draped over a rail to dry. A second woman enters through an open door near a bed and looks curiously at her companion. Keene worked for Punch, or the London Charivari, between 1864 and 1890 and this sketch likely was a preliminary idea for a cartoon. Possibly related is a published image of 1881, titled "The Servants" that shows a nursemaid reading a sensational novel while ignoring a baby on her lap, and being scolded by her mistress.
