Two mounted knights in armor for different types of course: a course with shoulder armor (rouelle) at right; and a course with target shield (targe) at left.. The knight on the left is mounted on a horse wearing green and white striped colors and has a helmet with two large white feathered wings. The knight on the right rides a horse in yellow and black striped colors with the letter M, and has a helmet with two horns curling back.. In the course, the knight aimed his lance tip at a particular target point on his opponent's armor. In the joust, the object was to unseat the opponent.. Handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
