Two knights on horseback in armor for a course with shield (course de bouclier), and a course with grill (course de gril), a joust with a metal grill covering the body.. The helmetless knight at left wears tunic in hatched pink in the same colors as his horse's colors and even the high "bouclier" shield rising up from his saddle. The helmetless knight at right wears a tunic in black with gold stripes, to match his horse's colors. The flank of the horse blanket is decorated with a golden radiant sun. The metal "gril" on his breast is bright gold with another radiant sun.. In the course, the knight aimed his lance at a particular spot on the opponent's breastplate - when this button was hit, a metal plate was shot into the air above the knight.. Handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
