Tom Browne (1870 - 1910), artist and illustrator. Known as a 'black and white artist' , as magazine illustrators of the day were, Browne is credited with drawing the first comic strip in 1896 (it appeared in Chips) but his work appeared in many forms - posters, postcards, advertisements and magazine illustrations. He was a regular contributor to Punch and The Tatler. He died tragically young of cancer at the age of 39. Two photographs show him at 21 and at the age of 34. Date: 1904
