Thomas Wolsey (1475-1530) English statesman and churchman. Archbishop of York. Appointed Cardinal by the Pope in 1515, and Lord Chancellor of England by Henry VIII on Christmas Eve the same year. Fell out of favour with the king because of the delay in the divorce proceedings against Catherine of Aragon. Died while on his way to London as a prisoner.
