Terracotta mold for a relief applique 1st century B.C.-1st century A.D. Roman, Gallic The Roman pottery of the Rhone Valley is characterized by the profligate use of relief medallions applied to the exterior surface of their vases. This mold was likely used to make such a medallion, and there is another identical example as well, now in the Musee de Saint Germain, Iseres, France. This ancient clay mold (and the modern plaster case made from it displayed nearby) attests to the iconographical and pictorial complexity of such reliefs.
