The temples, columns, and other carved decoration on the Acropolis in Athens were not as we see them today - colorless carved blcoks of stone and marble. Rather they were painted. Today, traces of the colors are still visible, but in the late 1800s and early 1900s when some of the first large modern-day excavations and preservation efforts took place, the colors were more prominent. This 1910 drawing shows colored carved representations of the sculpted fragments found of the monster Typhon and a serpent figure.
