The Sulkey Plow (also spelled Sulky) dates to the Middle Ages in Europe. In the early United states, it was a plow that the plowman controlled with one or two handles. In the 1840s, a new version of the sulkey plow came on the scene, as seen here in this 1887 illustration. It had wheels and a seat for the plowman. The lettering on the seat says Oliver Chilled Plow, a company founded by James Oliver in 1853 in Indiana.
