A more accomplished and probably later variant exists in two very rare casts (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Musei Civici dArte e Storia, Brescia). Here the pose of Saint Jerome has been changed, the lion removed, the background extended, and the crucifix placed more to the right of the scene.
