St Gregory (Gregory the Great) - Shortly before becoming Pope, St. Gregory saw some English children who were to be sold as slaves in the Roman Forum, he thought that they were very beautiful and was told that they were "Angli" (English), he said that they looked like "Angeli" (Angels). He also learned that the English did not know about the Christian God, so during his Papacy, he sent missionaries to England. Date: Circa 590 AD
