Square Piano ca. 1810 German This small piano has a rather crude pentagonal case. The unusual shape is reminsicent of other southern German or Austrian instruments of so-called "harp" form, where the case and instrument resemble a small harp laid on its side. Internally, the mechanism of the action and the dampers are carefully and elegantly built. The discrepancy between the crude case and the elegant mechanism may suggest that the instrument is the product of two different individuals, a skilled piano craftsmen and a provincial carpenter.
