Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814). Battle of Salamanca (22 July 1812). Combat that took place in the town of Arapiles, south of Salamanca, in which they faced the allied armies of Spain, England and Portugal, under the command of General Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), against the Napoleonic troops led by Marshal Marmont, which were defeated. This French defeat dealt a severe blow to Napoleon's plans to invade Portugal, as it prevented the installation of the bases and arsenals that were necessary to carry out the invasion. Illustration by Serra Pausas. "Glorias Espanolas" (Glories of Spain). Volume IV. Published in Barcelona, 1890.
