Spain, Extremadura, Ca´ceres province. On 9 October 1881, King Alfonso XII (1857-1885) visited the mining town of Aldea Moret, taking advantage of the trip to the nearby city of Ca´ceres, where he had come for the inauguration of the Madrid-Lisbon railway. The village (at present it is a district of Ca´ceres) was called Moret as a tribute of gratitude and appreciation to the distinguished orator and economist Segismundo Moret y Prendergast (1833-1913). The population of Aldea Moret worked in the phosphate mines, which, although they were known many years ago, were not exploited until September 1876. Thanks to his influence, Moret managed to get a branch of the railway to the mine mouth, so that the phosphorite could be distributed throughout the country. Parade of the workers before the king. Life drawing by Juan Comba. Engraving. La Ilustracion Espan~ola y Americana, 1881.
