Spain. Catalonia. Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814). The city of Manresa opposed much resistance to French occupation. Between 1810 and 1812, the French Imperial Army carried out five incursions on the city. From 16 March to 4 April 1810, a significant French contingent under the command of General Schwartz entered Manresa. On 5 November, they carried out a punitive operation in the town, setting fire to and looting houses. On 30 March 1811, the most serious events occurred in occupied Manresa. General Macdonald's troops ransacked houses, set fire to around forty buildings and executed six citizens. French excesses in Manresa. Illustration by Serra Pausas. "Glorias Espanolas" (Glories of Spain). Volume IV. Published in Barcelona, 1890.
