It was originally part of the Linares-Puente Genil line, built by the "Compan~ia de los Ferrocarriles Andaluces" between 1879 and 1893. The section between Espeluy and Jae´n was completed in 1881, long before the rest of the line, allowing the city of Jae´n to be linked to the rest of the Spanish railway network.
