Spain, Andalusia, Cádiz. Gate of La Caleta. Built in 1748 as a new access gate to La Caleta de Santa Catalina, known as "La Caleta". After the Anglo-Dutch attack against the city in 1596, and the subsequent sacking, it was decided that the whole perimeter of Cádiz must be walled. Construction began at the end of the 16th century and was completed in the 18th century. Detail of an inscription in Latin script. It mentions the month of April 1558, when construction work began on the Castle of Santa Catalina, the oldest military construction in Cadiz, carried out by the architect and military engineer Cristóbal de Rojas.
