The Shell Fisherman, 1902. Jan Toorop (Dutch, 1858-1928). Drypoint; platemark: 18.5 x 15.5 cm (7 5/16 x 6 1/8 in.); sheet: 38.1 x 35 cm (15 x 13 3/4 in.). Jan Toorop made The Shell Fisherman when he lived in Katwijk aan Zee, a small fishing village on the coast of the North Sea in the Netherlands. His interest in portraying the timeless relationship between humans and the land and sea led him to depict a shell fisherman, presented in profile against the dunes and the sea, carrying his scoop-net on a long pole over his shoulder. His deeply weathered features are evidence of his rugged labor.
