Shah Jahan, c. 1630. Hashim (Indian, active 1598-c.1650). Opaque watercolor, ink and gold on paper; overall: 5.4 x 3.7 cm (2 1/8 x 1 7/16 in.). This sensitive portrait jewel was probably painted shortly after Shah Jahan came to the throne of the powerful Mughal Empire in 1628 after the death of his father, Jahangir. He decided to wear a full beard, in reference to his increased orthodoxy in comparison to his more liberal father and grandfather. The artists signature appears behind Shah Jahans nape.
