Norway insisted on membership of the Atlantic Defence Pact, the Danish delegation being divided in the 'rather strained' discussions. Certain Danish parties incline towards Swedish proposals which do little more than ask for American sympathy towards a neutral and isolated Scandinavian Union and for delivery of arms and equipment to such a group. Linked with these proposals is a Swedish promise to defend Danish territory against aggression. January 24, 1949.
