The San Nicolás de Bari Hospital was the first hospital in America. It was built in 1503 in Santo Domingo de Guzmán, capital of La Hispaniola, current Dominican Republic. It was founded by Nicolás de Ovando, who at the time was governor of the island. Nowadays there are only ruins and it is currently located in the Colonial City or Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo; in Hostos Street, corner of Luperon Street.
