Sakai -- Sakai women often paint their faces by way of decoration. Like to put off bits of vegetation or feathers in their hair. One of the chief of the aboriginals in Malaya, is the Sakai, said to have come to the country thousands of years B.C. from Yunnan. The Sakai, who inhabit the Porthern hills which form the boundaries between Perak, Pahang and Kelantan, have developed a healthy physique and superior outlook to many of his kinsmen from other parts of Malay. This is partly due to the healthy climate, and partly because he has been free from the encroachment of other races. They are a pomadic tribe, often living in communal huts, and roam the jungle living on jungle fruits and animals which they hunt with bows and arrows and blowpipes, plant millet, tobacco, plantains and hill rice within their own compounds, moving on after a harvest or two. They are great swimmers, take quickly to football and are expert huntsmen. May 01, 1950. (Photo by British Official Photograph).
