This photograph was taken on the occasion of the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Griffiths for his determined leadership of the Squadron during an attempted raid on a German convoy in the Schillig Roads, north of Wilhelmshaven on 14 December 1939. Twelve Wellingtons took part, of which three were shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire and fighters, two collided and one crashed on attempting to land back at Newmarket. John F Griffiths was the first Canadian to be given a permanent commission in the RAF since the First World War.
