Rocket Takes Off On Record Flight -- A Navy Viking II rocket takes off from the White Sands, N.M., proving ground last May 24 on what the defense department says is a record climb to a height of 158 miles above the Earth. The department said a camera installed in the rocket took the highest photographs of the Earth ever made. The rocket, weighing 7½ tons and 45 feet long, carried nearly half a ton of scientific instruments. January 19, 1955. (Photo by AP Wirephoto).
