Representation of the blood-brain barrier between the bloodstream and the central nervous system. It serves to regulate the environment (homeostasis) in the brain, separating it from the blood. Although the endothelial cells that line the capillaries are the essential components of this barrier, the astrocytes surrounding the blood capillaries in the brain (in purple) also constitute the blood-brain barrier.
