Khao Sam Roi Yot became Thailands first coastal National Park in 1996. It covers an area of approximately 100 square kilometers (40 square miles) including steep limestone mountains riddled in places with caves, marshes, mangrove swamps, sandy beaches and shallow sea waters along the coast. The name sam roi yot means three hundred peaks and this refers directly to the many limestone outcrops and peaks that characterize the park, rising dramatically to heights of more than 650 meters (2,150 feet). Much of the reserve is a home and refuge for a wide range of wildlife, including serow, barking deer, Malayan pangolin, palm civet, fishing cat, Malayan porcupine, Javan mongoose, Siamese hare and grey-bellied squirrels.
