The Knights Hospitaller, or the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, was established in 1118 by Gerard Tenque. Their original purpose was to care for sick pilgrims, but they became a military order around 1140. After being expelled from the Holy Lands, the order evolved into the Knights of Malta..
