(166.3 × 51.8 cm). Date: early 16th century. The theme of quail and grasses was widely depicted in Southern Song-dynasty China (1127-1279), most often by artists in attendance at the imperial court. Many of these paintings became treasured objects in temple collections in Japan during the Muromachi period, and served as models for a number of bird and millet images created by 16th century Japanese artists. It is possible too that this type of composition was inspired by works from China's Piling school, also known as the Changzhou school, which specialized in bird and flower imagery. Piling-school paintings, exported from the port-city of Ningpo, found their way into Zen Buddhist temples as well as the collection of the Ashikaga shoguns. Here the richly applied, opaque mineral green pigment
