Punishment by the chain: the chain was placed round the condemned man's neck and to this was attached a bamboo pole which at its other end was attached to a post in the ground. The man could sit, stand, or lie, but when standing had to support the weight of the bamboo, this was the general method of keeping ment sentenced to tow boats while they were not working.
