A Primitive African Village is amazed by its first airplane south of Egypt and West of Abyssinia in tropical Africa lies Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, occasionally dotted with straw and wood hut villages like this one. This airview, taken by the first plane ever to land in the primitive village, offers remarkable study of community life in southern Sudan, ruled jointly by England and Egypt. One important industry in this area, as the picture emphasizes, is cattle raising. Chief agricultural crops are cotton, wheat and durra, a sorghum grain which is a staple food of the Sudanese. Sudan also is a principal source of the world's ivory supply. November 26, 1951. (Photo by The Register & Tribune Syndicate).
