Portrait of Queen Mary (1867-1953), Queen Consort to George V, popularly known as Princess May of Teck. Born at Kensington Palace, London, she was the only daughter of Francis, Duke of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. She originally accepted a proposal of marriage from George's elder brother, Albert Victor but following his death from pneumonia only six weeks later, she married the Duke of York in 1893. Together they had one daughter and five sons including the future Edward VIII
