Portrait by John St. Helier Lander of Douglas Haig (1861-1921), Commander of the First Corps of the British Expeditionary Force. He succeeded Sir John French as Commander in Chief in December 1915 and led Britain through an exhausting war of attrition for which he was much criticised. After the war, he devoted his time to caring for British ex-servicemen founding the Royal British Legion. Date: October supplement 1914
