Pitsa panels. Wooden panels featuring tempera-painted figures found near Pitsa in the vicinity of the ancient Greek city of Sicyon. Dated around 540 BC. Detail from Panel 1. Procession corresponding to a sacrifice to the nymphs. A man (not shown in full in this detail, on the left) and three women, wearing chitons and peplos, are walking towards an altar. They are accompanied by two musicians playing the lyre and the aulos. The woman in front of the altar appears to be pouring a libation from a jug. A child behind her, possibly a slave, leads the lamb to be offered in sacrifice. A Corinthian inscription shows the names of the women: Euthydika, Etheloncha and Eucholis, mentioning that the offering is dedicated to the nymphs. National Archaeological Museum. Athens, Greece.
