Photograph of Archibald Philip Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery, pictured in 1909 when he was drifting away from the Liberal Party to take a more Independent or Conservative stance. In 1894 Rosebery succeeded Gladstone, to become Liberal Prime Minister. As well as a political career, Rosebery was a devoted race-goer and horse owner, winning the Derby three times. Date: 1909
