Northern Rhodesia's New Cement Factory. The new Chilauga cement works, launched as a Northern Rhodesia Government and Colonial Development Corporation project, represents one of the most important industrial undertakings for the future development of the country. Construction of the cement work started in 1949 and was completed in July y1951, and was officially opened by the Governor of Northern Rhodesia, Sir Gilbert Rennie, in Septeber. The original production target was planned at 55,000 tons per year, but today this figure represents but one third of the total requirements. Provision was made for an extension to be built in order to treble production. February 28, 1952. (Photo by British Official Photograph).
