ISS028-E-015461 (10 July 2011) --- This is one of a series of images showing various parts of the space shuttle Atlantis in Earth orbit as photographed by one of three crew members -- half the station crew -- who were equipped with still cameras for this purpose on the International Space Station as the shuttle posed for photos and visual surveys and performed a back-flip for the rendezvous pitch maneuver (RPM). Seen at the rear of the cargo bay is the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module, packed with supplies and spare parts for the orbiting outpost. A 400 millimeter lens was used to capture this particular series of images.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. In the Space Station Processing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center, the hatch on the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) Raffaello has been opened. Raffaello flew on mission STS-114 to the International Space Station, returning with about 7,000 pounds of Station material. The module will be aired out before workers enter to remove the contents. Three MPLMs were built by the Italian space agency Alenia Aerospazio. The other two are Leonardo and Donatello. The MPLMs are carried in the payload bay of a Shuttle orbiter, and carry materials, supplies and even experiments to the Space Station.

S80-36889 (24 July 1980) --- Astronaut Bruce McCandless II uses a simulator at Martin Mariettas space center near Denver to develop flight techniques for a backpack propulsion unit that will be used on Space Shuttle flights. The manned maneuvering unit (MMU) training simulator allows astronauts to "fly missions" against a full scale mockup of a portion of the orbiter vehicle. Controls of the simulator are like those of the actual MMU. Manipulating them allows the astronaut to move in three straight-line directions and in pitch, yaw and roll. One possible application of the MMU is for an extravehicular activity chore to repair damaged tiles on the vehicle. McCandless is wearing an extravehicular mobility unit (EMU).

The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope just over 1,000 feet (305 m) across, the largest single radio telescope. The main metal collecting dish sits fixed a hemispherical karst sinkhole. Because it is fixed, a spherical reflector hangs 500 feet (150 m) over the dish on a 900 ton platform, known as 'the feed'. This view is inside the reflector assembly. The observatory is the primary location of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, NAIC.
