The Napier stick, or Neper's ruler, an abacus, invented by the Scottish mathematician John Napier (in French, Neper) in 1617. The abacus consists of a flanged tray on which can be placed engraved strips. The left edge of the tray is also engraved, divided into nine boxes numbered from 1 to 9. The ten types of strips, which gave their name to the entire device, were originally made of bone, hence the English name of Napier's bones. They are divided into nine boxes. The upper box has a number from 0 to 9. The other eight boxes are divided in two by a diagonal line.
