Mural from the House of Apollo (Casa di Apollo de la Strada di Mercurio) at Pompeii (circa 300BC to AD79), excavated in 1839. Handcoloured lithograph by Konter from an illustration by Wilhelm Zahn in his own "Ornamente aller klassischen Kunst-Epochen nach den Originalen in ihren eigenthumlichen Farben dargestellt" (Ornaments of all classical art epochs after the originals and depicted in their proper colours.), Dietrich Reimer, Berlin, 1870. It includes interior decorations by Giulio Romano in the Palazzo del Te, Mantua, medieval mosaics in Sicily, and Roman wall paintings from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Wilhelm Zahn (1800-1871) was a German artist, architect and academic who traveled around Europe documenting classical and Renaissance architecture.
