The Modoc war drum is made of hide stretched over a wooden frame, tightened with thongs. The drum was sounded alll though the battle at Captain Jack's stronghold during the Modoc war, which took place at the Lava Beds, Lake Tule, California. The war was precipitated by the murder of General Canby of the US army and the Rev. Dr Thomas at the Conference of the Modoc Chiefs and the US Peace Commissioners. Date: 1873
