Models Test Canal Passages - Tests are being currently conducted at the near mile-long channel in the Navy's David Taylor Model Basin here to obtain data on the navigational characteristics of ships in restricted channels. Precision-scaled models 20 feet long, placed in water that is scaled to represent depths ranging from 45 feet to 80 feet, are either towed along the channel by an ingenious towing device (center) or cast loose on their own power. The current observations are in charge of Charles A. Lee, formerly of the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps. The director of the model 8 Asin, a general view of which is shown here, is Capt.H.E.Saunders, USN. March 15, 1947. (Photo by Wide World Photos).
