Provenance: The sheet was left by Leonardo as a legacy to his pupil Francesco Melzi; from whose heirs it was subsequently acquired by the Roman architect Pompeo Leoni, in about 1582-90; Thomas Howard second, count of Arundel, came into his possession before 1630; and probably later it was ceded to Charles II, step to the Royal Collection in 1690.
