Miracle in the Gorbals - A New Helpmann Ballet -- Miracle in the Gorbals, a new ballet by Robert Helpmann, with music by Arthur Blies and decor by Edward Burra, was presented by the Sudler's Wells company at the Prince's Theatre on Thursday 26th October. Maracle in the Gorbals has a scenario - a modern story set in the Gorbals district of Glasgow - by Captain Michael Bonthall, R.A., who devised the production of Hamlet in which helpmann acted the prince last spring. The music by Arthur Bliss was specially composed for the ballet. Edward Burra contributed the decor for Hinette De Valois Barabau and for Frederick Ashton's Rio Grande. Many of his early paintings were of shipyerds, docks, and the type of Glasgow street in which Helpmann's ballet is set. His designs for Miracle in the Gorbals are to be exhibited in November at the Redfern Gallery.
