Men of the later Derby groups being trained in munition work. The Derby groups were men who had attested before the end of 1915, putting themselves forward for joining up if required. Lord Derby was director of recruiting for Great Britain in 1915 and Minister of War from 1916-1918. Derby introduced a voluntary recruitment policy called the Derby Scheme, with the emphasis on recruiting workers from the same offices or factories into battalions, known as 'Pals'. Date: 1916
