Members of the Nyasaland Volunteer Reserve at Karonga, in the north of the country. Karonga was the scene of much fighting in September 1914. An attack was held off by the outnumbered defenders of the township until the arrival of a column from the main British force drove off the enemy. Nyasaland, in East Africa, is now known as Malawi.
